Book Review: Whom Dragons Rule: Candace Christine Little

Author: Candace Christine Little
No of Pages: 318
Publication House: CreateSpace
Date of Publication: 22nd June, 2014
Genre: Fairy Tale

Summary: (from goodreads.com)
“I did not choose it—it chose me. And I can only ever be free of the burden by succeeding where my forefathers failed—or by death.”

To rescue the survivors of Terresol and see the land freed from the dragons—Duke Ryldalon lives for little else. But King Trevill has different plans for him:

“When I die, the full weight of the crown of Ouvertcoeur shall fall upon your head. As my time is likely short, you must begin to prepare for it, lest that great weight crush you.”

The dragons, ever eager to rule and to ruin new lands, have different plans for them both.

** The book had been sent by the author/publisher for an honest review and by no means the review is biased/influenced**

STAR RATING: 3.5/5
DESCRIPTION IN ONE LINE: I would love to visit such this paradise with the magical flowers.

Title: Whom Dragons Rule makes a good title for the story because it certainly tell us that dragons rule at a place of significance for the protagonist and it justifies the story.
Title Rating: 4.5/5

Cover: It averted me from reading the book. Honestly the cover is a big let down because it doesn't attract the readers to its interesting contents. Something graphical and extremely colourful would have been more intriguing. The cover could have been one of the dragons or the Duke himself or even the mysterious lady trapped in the castle. The cover is the first thing that helps in forming an impression regarding the book and it certainly is disappointment.
Cover Rating: 2.5/5

Characters: DUKE: He is the protagonist and a level headed person right from the beginning who believes in proper measures than reckless decisions. He keeps his eyes and ears open and has certainly an able leader despite his past.
KING: He is so immersed with his theory of his family curse that he has forgotten to enjoy the beauties of life. He has proved himself a good ruler and never neglected his duties even in the times of distress. He love for the duke is genuine and brotherly.
PRINCESS: Derived by the duty towards her own kingdom she is charming, sensible, clever, caring and most important compassionate. I cannot find words enough to praise this lady.
OTHERS: Falnnor and countess form a pivotal role in the stories and have been formed efficiently pointing out their strenghts and secrets as the story proceeds.
Characters Rating: 4/5

Review: Fairy tales are known to carry the reader to a place of he/she might not have thought of even in one's wildest dreams. The Duke has a task to accomplish left incomplete by his forefathers and has not the slightest idea about the conspiracies against him and the King long before they were born. There are shocking revelations which will keeps the readers enthralled. The king has a platter of shocks himself but he and the Duke thrive in their purpose. The king is rather a surprise package taking a decision which if rationally thought upon, may declare him fool. The story unfolds with climaxes at every corner keeping the reader away from yawning and a craving to know the end. The story feels like a bit rushed at the end and addition of some 20-30 pages more would have made up a smooth ending rather an abrupt one.
Review Rating: 4/5

Appreciation: The vivid descriptions of Ouvertcoeur made me fall in love with the place and the story line was smooth and well thought of. There were proper explanations to peculiar past instances and the Hero did justice to his character. The supporting characters knew their part well so we can say author has done a pretty good job.

Let Downs: There have been certain let downs besides the cover. The story lacked physical descriptions which made it hard to imagine the characters in the head and created some really foggy images. An excellent story should be like a movie making the reader hold his/her breath and read like a maniac which can only be achieved by descriptions. The end as described was rushed and the story had a scope for sequel had the prologue not been over the edge.

Final Verdict: Recommended as an average read but not boring at any place. Just the end has me little disturbed (but that's just for me, others might find it highly interesting) otherwise the book is really full of surprises at every nook and cranny.

Would I be reading more from Candace: The author has a great potential which can be easily judged by this particular book. I hoped she would have planned a sequel with either Falnnor or Travell having an interesting adventure rescuing the mystery lady mentioned in the beginning. I'll sure read whatever she's got under her sleeve next.

Book Review: Dystopia: Janet McNulty

Author: Janet McNulty (her official website)
No of Pages: 214
Publication House: MMP Publishing
Date of Publication: 4th April, 2013
Genre: Young Adult Fiction

Summary: (from Goodreads.com)
Imagine living in a world where everything you do is controlled.

In the distant future the United States has been split into two regions separated by a barren wasteland; this is the country of Dystopia. Here the individual is discouraged, freedom is an illusion, food is rationed, and everything you do is tracked by a chip implanted in your arm. This is Dana Ginary’s world.

At age seventeen, people receive their career assignments chosen for them by a government body. Forced to work at the Waste Management Plant because she was declared too individualistic, Dana finds herself surrounded by death and brutality. Knowing her days are numbered, she looks for a way to leave the plant before she, too, becomes one of its causalities.

It is then she meets a man named George and soon finds herself caught up in a cat mouse game between the resistance and the Dystopian government. Dana finds herself faced with an agonising choice of whom she will betray and whom she will save: her friend George, her parents, or herself

** The book had been sent by the author for an honest review and by no means the review is biased/influenced**

STAR RATING: 4.5/5
DESCRIPTION IN ONE LINE: I was at the edge the entire time and turned pages eagerly.

Title: Dystopia actually means an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. The title is highly appropriate for the book and conveys the general idea of the book completely.
Title Rating: 5/5

Cover: The choice of the grim colours depicts the plight of the people of Dystopia and the pair of eyes is the indication of the constant watching. Certainly an apt cover and we must say the cover designer is an expert at his/her field of work.
Cover Rating: 4.5/5

Characters: DANA : Our rebel girl who is a fearless girl and not afraid to voice her opinions. She has a strong character in the trained world where people are not allowed to speak up. She's the pure dystopian fiction queen with the guts to rule down the President. She's sensitive to other's problems and not in the least frightened to help.
GEORGE: He's our secretive guy who doesn't trust easily and loves our Dana in fatherly sort of a way. He is gutsy and headstrong to bring down the government.
DANA'S FRIENDS: Dana has gained trust among her friends and they are ready to help her out in a land where bonding is a crime. They are understanding, caring, supportive and have certain individual qualities.
Characters Rating:4.5/5

Review: For a young adult not being given the right to choose a career and casted off to a place where dying was as easy as losing a  pin is a nightmare enough, topped up with chips that keep tracking every activity might give us cramps. The story unfolds with the Dystopian backdrop giving the general idea of the living conditions and the life Dana lives at the waste management after being herself being cast off the society as garbage. She voices her opinion as the girl-who-doesn't-care and is humanly in the hollow programmed world. She is blackmailed to give away the Resistance in order to save the ones she cares for and does what she feels is right. Its only time that makes her realise that the Government is as fake as their promises and stands up to make things right.
Review Rating: 4.5/5

Appreciation: The plot, suspense and trust issues make the book a gripping read. I was at the edge and couldn't sleep till I finally finished the book after midnight.

Let Downs: Although I hate to point out but the sentence formation was a bit on the weaker side. The reason for this might be being a children's writer initially. A better grip on the complex sentences would make it the perfect read.

Final Verdict: The story is a mind engrossing and makes you read till the last page non-stop. It is highly recommended for the young adults and even adults as it makes a good read for day. As the length is not very long it might keep you a bit jumpy in the most exciting way.

Would I be reading more from JANET MCNULTY: Definitely. Since the moment I have finished this book I have been eager to jump to the next book i.e. Tempered Steel in the Dystopia Series. I hope to lay my hands on the next, as soon as possible.
