The Married Woman's Woes

It's 21st century and still in many Indian families people cry when a girl child is born which is certainly not out of happiness. Although the reason should be the growing crime rate against the fairer sex which makes the parents think that their kid would be an object of lustful glares but as far as I have observed, they cry because they wanted a heir to their family. It is the shameless truth of India that majority of citizens still believes that only a male child is the future of their family. There might be endless list of women achievers who have made their parents proud and yet they are still the second grade citizens.

From the day a girl is born she's treated as a member who will eventually be sent out of home tied to the marital chains. I know marriage is a sacred union and blah blah but what happens after marriage? The girl who left her home, left her parents, left her dreams and even sacrificed her time of leisure is supposed to be a full time maid eventually? She's expected to fulfill wishes of every family member, cook for them, do their laundry, look after the kids and at the end there are a dozen of people who point out her faults every single day. They blame the lady for not bearing a son, for not bringing in dowry, lacking homemaker skills or not being physically satisfying. More women face sexual abuse even after being married because the male chauvinists can't take NO for an answer?

Then their is the working women class who are scanned with obscene glares at their work place no matter how they look. The men at their workplace make her so conscious that they can't walk in the office corridors with their heads held high. While the girl is already trying to achieve the work/home balance the spouse has objections or even implications on her conversing with a male co-worker. Instead of lending a helping hand the husband get an automatic right to sit and shout even on the way she dresses and go to her office. For God's sake she can't even make herself happy by wearing what she likes?

Even though the Government may declare that getting to reveal the sex of the unborn child is an offence still the practice is prevalent in many town and even cities. A large number of women are forced to abort their she-fetus against her wishes. Her own parents don't utter a word and tell her to agree with her in-laws in the name of her secure future. In some cases a shocking fact has come into light that many women abort their female child with their own will. What makes the women become the enemy of her own gender?

Lastly comes the worst issue i.e. the wrath that the rape victim earns from the family/in-laws.  We live in a society where the people say that DON'T GET RAPED rather than DON'T RAPE. It is always seen as the girl's fault that she became a victim because she was not dressed appropriately, she was enjoying some night life or she showed indicated that she is willing. She becomes a family outcast, an unclean woman who has no longer the right to live. The criminals usually get away with money/being juvenile or in most cases the cases go unreported out of shame. Does a lady ever ask to go through this perilous torture?

There are so many housewives or even the working women who are under depression because they are on the self reproach track. This happens because they are never allowed to share their thoughts, not supposed to give opinions and worst of all, not treated with respect that they deserve right from the day they were born. Women empowerment will be a wishful thinking till day we don't find solutions to the above unanswered questions. If doing a crime is horrendous, then bearing it is a bigger crime. Women will have to stand up for themselves instead of accepting everything as a play of fate.
